Beijing—the most culture-loaded Key words: circle/ barroom
As the political and cultural center of China, never will this city be short of big talkers, folk thinkers, and great artistic masters arising from the grass roots, as well as culture and nocturnal life, all of which are condensed in one place, that is, the barroom. As the main base area for nocturnal life, Beijingers’ killing time in the bar is not exactly for the sake of leisure, while social relations is the right destination. A lot of nocturnal Beijing people often wander in the barrooms in Three-mile village and Back Sea, where many bars assemble. In Beijing, one barroom represents a circle; while entering a bar, the people inside would tell you, all people here born in the 1970s, or in another bar, the famous musician Cui jian and his friends would play jazz at weekends, or even some other bar, the famous writer Wang shuo would often pay a visit there, and also have bars in which young directors who are in the film line would discuss films. So in Beijing, we have motor bar, soccer bar, artist bar etc., barrooms almost become the name card of Beijing’s night life. With culture penetrating everywhere, Beijing’s nocturnal life is full of unique lingering charm.
Shanghai---the world of the petty bourgeoisie

The slogan of international metropolis spurs most Shanghai people’s adrenal, making this city’s night elegant and appealing. The ten-mile foreign stand, just the same as the old time, Shanghai’s nocturnal life is prevalent of a strong flavor of petty bourgeoisie. When evening comes, fashionable party animals would all go out from all directions to assemble together and enjoy themselves. Mask party, bikini party, party following their inclinations etc., it seems that they are on the rush to give a performance elsewhere, and go from one party to another. The most popular evening show is the New World, the wine there are always foreign brands. On Nanking Road, the crowds there wouldn’t be dispersed but for a blast of heavy rain or SARS, the most dreadful disease. Party, just like Shanghai’s shadow, is not only a place to entertain people and relax ourselves, but a window for those petty bourgeoisie or suspected petty bourgeoisie to enjoy the emotional appeal, do social negations, and get to know new friends. Many white collars come here to relax, date, and also talk about their ideal, life. Even some hard problems which can’t be solved are easily settled here.
Changsha----the most entertaining

Changsha, capital of Hunan province, which is in south China, is regarded as the No. one entertainment city inland, not because it produces Super-voice girls, who are excellent singers, and Hunan Satellite TV, which is famous for its entertaining programs, but largely for the entertaining spirits inborn with Changsha people. Although lacking high-elated enthusiasm to start a career, people in Changsha is full of fashionable consumption values and happy life goals. In light of their income, Changsha people’s nocturnal life is really extravagant. Changsha has the most karaoke halls and the best facilities in China. The karaoke halls there are mostly medium and large, with seats form several hundred to approximate one thousand, and the attendance rate are ninety percent plus. It is really worthy of the name that when Changsha people are competing and singing songs, they would have a general mobilization across the whole city, just like the style of spicy girl: hot and thriving. From one to two in the morning is the golden time, with all the karaoke halls filled to capacity, the roads which are not heavy-trafficked during daytime now being blocked with even water being unable to flow over. When coming to the climax, five or six hundred people would follow the singer together, the ambience being not inferior to the concert of Super-voice girls. Some people say this is abnormal consumption for Changsha people, since they don’t earn too much money to afford it, but Changsha natives don’t care, if only they enjoy it.
Chengdhu-----the most leisurable

Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province in southwest China, is claimed as one city which once you come to, you would never like to leave. Chengdu people’s life is very leisurely, envied by people elsewhere. As for Chengdu natives, all are not real except life, so their nocturnal life can be generalized through two words: dining and wining! People in Chengdu are real life experts, their life being as easy as there being no necessity to work during daytime and sleep at night, always playing mahjong, killing time in the tea house or eating hot pot. When getting dark, the skewered meat cube is sold busily in the street. Later on, a long row of roadside food stall would line up with no end within the eyes ‘reach. Gnawing the rabbit head, peeling lobsters, chewing barbecues, playing the finger-guessing game with the shoulder bare and gossip around, eaters from all walks of life just enjoy themselves, with no sense of class division. Some people ride on a bike to drink a cup of beer, and some would drive a famous car like BMW to have a cube of skewered meat. A millionaire won’t feel disgraceful to have a bowl of noodles in the street, and a old nanny won’t feel diffident to go to a five-starred hotel to enjoy the cool there. Just like Chengdu natives say, we are all fish is in the waters of life, just swim to go.
Wuhan-----the world of people from the lower classes

Wuhan, capital of Hubei province in Central China, is a city in which the residents play the most important role. Its night life is really the carnival of people from grass roots. With the main base being the side walk snack eatery and karaoke hall, its night life has its own unique features under the influence of Changsha and Chengdu. As for eating refreshments, the street end is a good place. Just as the famous writer Chili writes in her novel, Life Show, Jiqing Street is a good place, where grassroots people’s revelry is fully displayed. Eaters randomly order some small dishes, and call the street actors to give a show, which is more satisfactory than drinking several bottoms of beer. After enjoying the roadside foods, Wuhan people would go to see performances in the karaoke hall. The enthusiastic and seductive samba dance, passionate and energetic dace, elegant and classic ethnic dances alternatively takes their turn to perform. The one-act play with Han majority’s flavor brings the climax of the performance. When coming the most exciting part, Wuhan natives would repeatedly shout “hi” loudly and use anything firm that can be found to hit the table, never being afraid of causing any damage, because the karaoke hall staff already covered the table with a thick layer of steel. All of us are secular people, nobody being superior or nobler. Wuhan people explain that it’s tired enough during the daytime, and you’d be more tired if you still try to be elegant in the evening.
Guangzhou---the most material Key words: desire/ consumption
Although considering rushing for material possessions as their mission, Guangzhou people prefer wandering resplendently in the evening, and consume crazily for enjoyment. As for Guangzhouers, the real subtle day begins from the evening time. After a busy day, Guangzhou people’s desire is fully exposed at night. They would rather ambitiously call midnight snack whiling away the night. They fully displayed pleasant sensation of crazy squandering and making money in the evening. The main content of their night life is shopping, killing time in the bar, and disco dancing. When evening begins to replace the day, crowds of people gathered in supermarkets, barrooms, discos, feet-washing houses to consume. Barrooms are the road lamps of Guangzhou people’s night life. Guangzhouers have their own purposes to kill time in the bar. Unlike Beijingese for the sake of culture, Shanghainese for emotional appeal, Guangzhou people are more directly for consumption on such as cigarettes, wine, girls, even one-night affair can be put in public. This is a city of desires, with its daytime quiet, but night full of disturbances and temptations---power, money, and hormone.
